Discord Usage Guide 2020
Part 1 : Setup
There are two steps that need to be done before you can join the TAE Discord server. These should both be done BEFORE using the invite code in order to prevent a duplicate account glitch on mobile devices.
MOBILE: For mobile devices, you can simply open your native app store and search for "Discord" and then install.
DESKTOP: For desktop, visit discord.gg. From there click "Install for [Your OS]".
After having installed Discord on your device(s). You will need to create an account. The application will prompt you, so just follow those steps. While you can use any username, using the same username as your ingame one will allow us to quickly identify you on the server. You can always change this later.
With Discord installed and with an account created, you can now use the TAE invite code to join the server. Your chapter officers have likely posted the invite code in the game, however you can also click on Discord at the bottom of the screen to join.
Part 2 : Initial Navigation
When you first join the TAE server you will be on the #welcome-and-rules channel. Please read the rules and other information available on that channel before moving on. We also have a link to our Facebook page here - feel free to like our page if you want.
MOBILE: On mobile devices the screen is divided into three panels. The main panel is the channel that you currently have open. The name of the channel will be at the top of the screen, along with tabs to open the two other panels or the search bar. The bottom of the screen has the option to take pictures, post pictures from gallery, and the message bar. This layout is the same on all channels. If you drag from the right of the screen to the left or click the top right persons icon the app will open the channel members panel. This will show everyone that has access to at least see this channel. Higher ranked members show up higher in the list, and roles are color coded. Offline members are listed at the bottom alphabetically. Tapping on a user will show more details about them, including their roles, connections, and any notes you write about them (Only you can see these notes). Tapping on the far left will close the channel member panel. Dragging from left to right will show several sections. At the top is the server name, and at the right is a list of servers that you are a member of. In the server section the top box will open the direct messages panel, which you can use to communicate with individual people or groups of people (Up to 10). The bottom section has 5 tabs - Standard, Friends, Search, Mentions, and User Settings. The main portion of this panel, however, is dominated by the server navigation. Our server has several sections, or categories. The Noticeboard contains official communications from TAE leaders, rules, the server invite, and other information. Public channels are open to everyone that joins the server, and includes the role-requests channel. A category that is initial closed people who have just joined the Discord is the TAE Member Channels. These include channels for our "Public" chapters and servers, such as our Minecraft server or Terraria server. The rest of categories are dependant on other roles given to you for access. These include our TW2 chapter categories. This is done to make it harder for spies to infiltrate these chapters. You can open any channel you have access to in your main panel by simply tapping on the channel name.
DESKTOP: The desktop interface of Discord is much easier to navigate compared to mobile. The main section of the app is the channel panel, in which you can read and send messages to other members. The + icon on the message bar allows you to attach files. The top of this panel shows the channel name. To the right of the screen is the list of members with access to the channel, with higher ranked members near the top of the panel. Colors dictate member roles within TAE, and offline members are shown at the bottom of the list alphabetically. Clicking on a member will bring up additional information about them, from the game they are playing to their roles and notes you have made. You can also message them from this panel. On the right side of the Discord screen is a list of servers followed by the server panel. The server panel allows for naviagtion of the server by clicking on a channel name. The very bottom of this has some details of your account, and allows for you to access your settings. As it is easier to navigate on desktop compared to mobile, we will leave you to explore the categories rather than explaining each one.
Part 3 : Membership Roles
In order to gain access to your chapter's channels, you will need the role associated with their category. To recieve game related roles, you will need to send a message in #role-requests. Follow the instructions posted by Elderis Solstella, and your chapter leader will approve the request when they get the chance. When approved, you will be granted a role that gives you acceess to the channels you need, after which you can navigate to them like any other channel.
TW2 Members: Your chapter leader may need to grant you additional access as the TW2 section is divided into different channels for different servers. If they forget, simply remind them to give you access to those server channels.
